Egg Yolk + Food Coloring = Paint

A couple of months into The Egg Unit, we wondered about egg tempera paint–how to make it and its history. Gerahlynn writes:

The materials you will need to make egg paint:
1. An egg
2. Two paper or plastic bowls
3. Spoon or stick
4. Water (optional)
5. Food coloring
6. Paint Brush.

Step one: Set your materials up.

Step two: Slightly crack your egg.

Step three: Separate the albumen from the yolk.

Step four: Choose the color(s) you want to make your paint.

Step five: Mix the food coloring and yolk together.

Step six: After mixing for about two to three minutes you may begin painting. Your paint may be light or dark; it doesn’t matter, the color.

Jayala adds:

I never thought that you could make paint with egg yolk and food coloring. When you look at a paint bottle it has so many different ingredients but when you make paint with an egg all you need is yolk and food coloring. I liked painting with the egg paint cause you didn't need much and the paint would dry fast and after the paint was dry it looked so glossy and smooth. Egg paint just may be better than regular paint and plus egg paint doesn't have those strong fumes that regular paint has so I do think that egg paint is better than regular paint.
